I am having trouble figuring out how to perform two stage cutting. I need to use a 1/2 bit for big areas then use a 1/8 for detail but not sure how to do it. Does anyone know if this is possible in vcarve?

The Vectric tutorials will walk you through this and lots of other things you can do with V-Carve. They are a great resource.
Search for information concerning the large area clearance feature of a pocket tool path. It’s quite simple in Vcarve to set it up and use.
1/2" sounds a little aggressive…I would probably lean towards a 1/4" and a 1/8" endmill.
