When I turn on the spindle either through the Easel software, or by switching it on directly at the power supply the vast majority of the time it will not begin to spin unless I give it a solid push in the correct direction. I don’t have a huge experience with electric motors but this seems…not good. Anything I should be looking for?

yeah your spindle is dead. just call or email the help line and they will get you a new one.
id recommend just going ahead and upgrading to a trim router like the dewalt dwp611 or bosch colt. i believe they will credit you the difference towards the mount youll need but dont quote me
