Prayer request board

After a co-worker let me chainsaw slab some red maple from their backyard, this interesting piece opened up. My spousal unit has a minister cousin who is a chaplain at a childrens’ hospital and she was looking for some type of prayer request board for the front of her chapel. The heartwood on this made a nice abstract religious representation, in my opinion, and looked like a good candidate. It took a bit to set up, since it wouldn’t fit through my planer and I didn’t want to take a chance of removing too much material anyway. I had to shim and clamp a number of times to get adequate, even cutting depth.

The slots are for the 3X5 cards that the kids write on, fold up and leave for the minister to collect.

This is about 33 inches tall.

Nice!

In a future project instead of crazy accurate shimming, you could do a basic shim job to get it close and secure then surface the piece with a 3/4" router bit ( This is how i surface my wasteboard) prior to doing the engraving.

i’d make such a badass slingshot out of that thing…
