How to eliminate pieces of an object

I am trying to create a template for a plaque I want to design.
The outline for the plaque is composed of an oval combined with a rectangle.

In the attached image the lines marked with a Red X need to be eliminated or at least not carved
so as to achieve the outline I’m looking for - seems simple but it has me stumped.

What are the overall dimensions of your rectangle?
You’d be better off using a vector editing software like Inkscape for this, and importing the SVG.

Mike just select both shapes, go to edit and select combine. It will create the shape you are looking for but as a FILL. Just change cut to outline (outside I assume).
