Dealing with gradients with Inkscape

I’ve seen a few posts that touch on gradients, but nothing that takes me through turning a grayscale image (attached) in Inkscape (was created with PS CS6) into an SVG that Easel can import. Can anyone help with that?

Alternatively, a different workflow that doesn’t involve Inkscape and/or Easel would be fine. I just think that it must be possible to make something like this with the Carvey - is it not possible?

I’ve seen that discussed as the way to turn a grayscale jpg like mine into a suitable SVG, but I need some guidance on how to actually do it.
