Arduino COM issues

I have tried every solution I can think of from the Arduino site to get my basic “blink” program so I can actually use the machine I built. So far no luck on the forums, and I posted a similar post with no replied on here as well. Could use some expert assistance since at this point I have no idea what else to do.

My USB sees it self at Arduino COM 3

I can compile and when it sends I either get a Busy messege, or this

Arduino: 1.6.4 (Windows 8.1), Board: “Arduino Uno”

Sketch uses 1,030 bytes (3%) of program storage space. Maximum is 32,256 bytes.

Global variables use 9 bytes (0%) of dynamic memory, leaving 2,039 bytes for local variables. Maximum is 2,048 bytes.

I suggest you call inventables customer service first thing Monday, and I am sure they will give great help over the phone. (312) 775-7009 or help@inventables.com It still looks like a connection issue but I am not qualified to best help you. Give customer service a try, you will be glad you did.

Try to use another uploader in the arduino ide tool. It’s located underneath serial port In the toolbar.

I second @DonDespain

You have probably checked this, but it has caused similar problems for me. Are you sure the right Arduino is selected in the “boards” menu? I have tried to program an Uno with Mega selected.

I’m using the UNO option I finally got it to upload blink for testing purposes, but easel still doesn’t see it I’m hoping customer support can remote in or walk me through what ever simple step I’m missing

Once I have it running I’ll start beta testing a depth sensor I have extra from my old Printrbot Metal Simple.

@CrisA_Intagliata_hoo Did you load grbl 0.9i? Easel does not load that.

Bart I did not please attach link cannot believe I didn’t think if that… … kinda embarrassing I’ll try it tomorrow night

@CrisA_Intagliata_hoo The files for grbl 0.9i are here, but there are several settings you need to change.

I suggest you contact help@inventables.com. They will send you the file to upload and instructions.

I am by far not an expert, but I may be able to help as I have just been through all of this myself and just got my machine running! If you haven’t heard from anyone and want to see if I can get you through some things you can contact me:

Yea well I went through that process to try to diagnose my Com issue wish there were written instructions on this from Inventables

Okay, what am I doing wrong? I followed the machine setup instructions in the X Carve page and Arduino does not act like the instructions says it should. I went to the Arduino page, clicked the Windows Installer. The software downloaded, then asked if I wanted to install it. I clicked install, all of the boxes were checked, software, drivers, etc. The software installed, then nothing. I looked for it in my devices so I would know what com port to select and nothing. I then uninstalled and tried again same thing. So I uninstalled and tried it with the power supply on and same thing. I’m sure it’s something simple but I followed the instructions and it’s not failing or automatically installing the drivers without telling it to.

Perplexed!!

You can try contacting Inventables directly via email or phone - About Inventables | Inventables

I bet they’ll get you sorted out right away

Hey, just wanted to say I’m having the exact same issue. I was able to plug everything in, and got to easel setup and when I got to the screen where you are supposed to verify your stepper motors, nothing worked. So I shut everything down, rebooted, and turned everything back on to give it another go.

Now, the Arduino board doesn’t communicate at all, with anything. I thought maybe I blew the software sid eof it, so I tried it on another windows laptop, no dice. Same with the mac laptop. I plug it in, it shows up as an Uno in the device manager with a COM port, but I can’t upload anything to it, and Easel doesn’t even see it there.

So far I’ve tried uploading different sketches, rebuilding/compiling grbl, tried reflashing the firmware, no dice. I have an old Arduino Mega, and I noticed that the yellow LED blinks while it’s running, where the UNO does not, it’s always on (as well as the green power LED). If I reset the UNO to DFU mode, it’ll blink briefly, and the TX/RX works fine when I upload firmware, but otherwise when I try to upload sketches to the UNO I get the same “not in sync” messages. I’ve rebuilt/compiled GRBL for my Mega2560 and it wakes it well enough, but it doesn’t fit in the box for the xcarve, so I haven’t tried adding in the controller board and wiring to see if Easel works with it (don’t wanna short anything out).

I’ll be getting in touch with the support guys too, but I’m starting to feel bad. I already twisted two of the heads off the thread cutting screws (which I had to drill out and replace with some beefier screws), I was short a couple of the t-nuts, and the delren nut was bad as well (wrong thread I think, way too tight on the acem rod). They were super awesome by getting it next-dayed out to me, but now I gotta ask for something else. :frowning: I hope they don’t get irked.

Try removing the gShield and see if you can talk to the Uno by itself. If that works then you may not be mounting the gShield properly. It’s real easy to plug it in wrong. It may look right if you plug the gShield in wrong, but it won’t work. It took me several tries to get it right.

If everything is happy you should get a blue led and three green leds lit up on the gShield (power to the Uno through the USB port and 24 volt power supply turned on).

Ah, that could be something.

I just tried using the Arduino MEGA that I know works& communicates, installed GRBL, and plugged it in. The Blue power LED turns on, but there are no green LEDs for the axis. Didn’t have any when I used the UNO either. It’s seated well now, not mounted in the case.

Unless you have found a Grbl version specific to the the Arduino Mega that shouldn’t work. I don’t think the Mega and Uno are similar enough to run the same code, but I could be wrong about that.

So, if you are sure that the pins of the gShield are mating properly with the Uno, then do a thorough check of your stepper motor wiring. Also, there is a separate branch of the Grbl 0.9i code that is used for the X-carve, make sure that you have the right version.

Thanks for the help, I’ll double check the GRBL version in the morning. I did find the GRBL version for the Mega, I’ll rebuild that tomorrow as well. I rechecked the stepper motor wiring, the Y axis was a little loose, but when I spin a stepper (x, y and z) the LED blinks. Blue LED lights up when I turn the power on, arduino green and yellow LED both light up when I plug it in to a PC (no blinking, both solid).

I’m walking away for the evening, too tired after trying to get it to work all day. Maybe I’ll pick up another uno at Radio Shack and try it tomorrow.
